Set a hard stop timer when studying Bybit perpetual contracts

Guides · 2026-09-30

Learning about perpetual contracts usually begins innocently: reading the help centre, watching how the contract screen works, looking at the leverage slider. Within the same session, many people open a position just to see what happens. That first impulsive trade is often larger and more leveraged than anything they would choose after a night's sleep. A hard stop timer separates study from action. You decide in advance how long the study session lasts and agree with yourself that no position can be opened during it. This guide describes how to run such sessions on Bybit, what to study and when, if ever, to move from study to a tiny live test.

Set the timer and the rule

Before opening the contract screen, set a timer for a fixed period, such as half an hour, and write one rule: no positions during study time. When the timer rings, close the app. The rule sounds simple, but writing it down and seeing the timer makes it much easier to keep. If you break it, note why in your journal; that note is itself useful information.

What to study

Use the official Bybit help centre to learn margin, maintenance margin, liquidation, margin modes and funding. Summarise each in one sentence in your own words. Look at the order screen without placing anything, and observe how the estimated liquidation price changes when you move the leverage slider. Avoid videos that promise fast profits; they tend to skip the parts that matter most.

Signs you are not ready

If you cannot explain liquidation without notes, if you feel urgency to trade before the timer ends, or if you find yourself thinking about recovering a past loss, you are not ready for a live position. That is normal. Repeat study sessions on different days until the concepts feel boring rather than exciting. Boredom is a good sign.

From study to a tiny test

If you decide to try, schedule the test on a separate day. Use the smallest size and the lowest leverage, write down the maximum loss you accept and read the liquidation price before confirming. Afterwards, record fees and funding from your history. Remember that choosing not to trade perpetual contracts at all is a perfectly reasonable conclusion.
